WHALE OF A TIME IN MIRISSA----

Sri Lanka has become a global event for Whale and Dolphin watching from about three years back thanks to much work done by the re knowned naturalist GEHAN dE silva Wijeratne.I engaged in this trip in Feb 2012 and had the privilege of seeing Spinner Dolphins and two Blue whales and the experience was awesome.
Some boats like this one had an upper deck and a toilet as well and could house 30 guests .

THIS IS THE FISHERIES HARBOUR IN MIRISSA FROM WHICH POINT ALL BOATS SAIL.

One has to go around this gorge to enter the sea

Beautiful gorge from the other side

Some boats saw the dolphins closer than others

We too got our chance

This guy only sees any indication of water been sprouted by the Blue whale coming to the surface to breathe and then directs the the boat to steer close to them before they go down and come out from a distance after about 10 minutes. It was amazing to see him doing the balancing act with ease standing up in  the front.

The Navy boat fully equipped and modern that could accommodate up-to 300 guests. Though it is fast ,maneuvering  to get close to the whales was pretty difficult and was lagging behind all the time.

This is how Blue  Whales gush out water when they surface

Going in at a distance

This Liner was lucky to see at close range at one point..

-----And this one..

When we got our chance after about 5 attempts the scene was breath taking and a little scary as well .These 2 adults submerged from our right side not even 10 meters away.

This was a super scene.

A few commercial liners like this one also passed by and we had to give way for them to pass.

Got the chance to photograph this unique way of fishing done in this part only on the way back.
